The Model N is very good as a single player arcade machine. It supports a lot of games, so this is really a comprehensive unit. I purchased mine with the DK graphics, and it looks fantastic. It took a little over two hours to assemble mostly by myself. I just followed along with the YouTube video that they provided for the instructions. Each piece was labeled, so no issues there. The build quality of the cabinet is excellent and very sturdy. The included riser is durable and looks great too.
I also had the control panel flipped so the joystick is on the right. For a small fee, they customized the control deck and matched the graphics accordingly. I prefer a right-handed joystick and this works great for me. Communication throughout the process was excellent. They even accommodated some delivery changes I needed to make.
I’m new to the RetroPie world, so it was some trial and error along with searching for some guides to figure out how to perform basic tasks. RetroPie has a ton of menu options, so it’s easy to get overwhelmed. A short tutorial video would be useful for newbies like myself. There is a lot of online documentation though, so I was able to find some guides. I’m going to probably make a quick user reference card so my wife and any visitors playing can navigate it.
The monitor is a 19-inch mounted horizontally. It appears to be an IPS style monitor which has great viewing angles although the colors are not quite as vibrant. The games are full screen by default, but I prefer the original aspect ratio. ArcadeModUp uploaded a help video to show how to change the scaling (aspect ratio). You may have to try some different ratios if you want the correct one (core provided didn’t work very well for me). I went through the games I play the most and set them all up.
The sound is very good with two speakers mounted up front. It included the necessary amp, and it has volume, treble, and bass controls. You just lift the control panel (it swivels up), and it’s an easy adjustment.
The joystick and trackball both work fine. The joystick came set to 8-way, but it’s easy to change to a 4-way with the restrictor plate. I mostly play 4-way type games on this, so it’s probably going to stay in that mode.
Overall, this is an excellent buy, especially for the price and what you get. It complements other ¾ arcade units, and it’s super fun. This is making my home arcade dreams come alive.
